ECKLON – FACTS ABOUT SEAWEED

Ecklonia Maxima grows in the cold, antarctican, non polluted and  clear waters of the Benuguela current.

The Sixth Continent – The sea, or the sixth continent, with its special biochemical properties, has the capacity to support cellular life because it contains all the principal elements necessary for cellular metabolism.

The first living cell appeared in the sea, millions of years ago.  It was probably a unicellular microscopic seaweed (algae), of the chlorelles group.  From the beginning of time, humankind’s links with the sea have remained essential and mysterious.  The human organism is truly a marine aquarium, where its constituent cells continue to live in the aquatic condition of their origin (law of marine constancy of René Quinton).

One can conclude without knowing all the workings, details or secrets that the sea is our nourishment and also our healer, because it knows what we are made of and what we are lacking when the body is not functioning well.

SEAWEED AND BEAUTY

The Skin and Sea Water – The barrier between the interior and the exterior of our body is the skin.  It is in direct contact with the interior through its excretory metabolic function, and it is the reflection of our internal metabolism.  The skin also establishes contact with the exterior through thousands of nerve endings, which immediately transmit information about the surroundings to nerve centers.  The skin acts as a regulator through its rhythmical function of respiration.  The skin covers and shapes us and separates the moist interior from the dry exterior.

The Trace Elements – All sea water elements intervene at the metabolic level.  Those present in large quantities have been known and in use for a long time in therapeutics.  René Quinton and Gabriel Bertrand were the first to gear their research towards these substances thought to be impurities.

Since then, the knowledge of trace elements has progressed and their role has been more specified.  They occur at the level of the enzyme-substrate reaction.  We know that any reaction in the organism is the transformation of one molecule (substrate) into another molecule, creating a catalyst (or enzyme) which is intact at the end of the reaction.  This enzyme cannot recognize its substrate unless it presents a certain special configuration.  This is when the trace elements come in to activate the enzyme molecule, mechanically modifying its configuration in such a way that it can take in the substrate.

Similarity between Human Plasma and Sea Water – The human body is 70% water.  In an individual weighing 110 lbs., the liquid portion is 9.2 gallons, of which 1.3 gallons are blood, ½ gallon is lymphatic fluid and 7.3 gallons are intracellular fluid or plasma.  Claude Bernard (1813-1878) discovered this in his research.

Expanding on Bernard’s discovery, René Quinton stated in 1897 that the human interior is analogous to substances found in marine life.  In his celebrated work (Sea Water, Organic Substance), he wrote: “In the internal environment of our system, and only there, do we find the same mineral make-up, the same physiognomy, as that of sea water.”  Of all the elements of the universe, the sea is the one with which we have kept the most intimate of bonds.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF ECKLONIA MAXIMA

Phytotherapy – Phytotherapy is therapy by the use of plants.  The fact that the Japanese consume 8 oz. of seaweed per day is an indication of the high nutritive value of these marine plants: that which is assimilated internally is also beneficial by epidermic application.  In France, phytotherapy has its place beside the traditional medical approach we call chemical therapy.  Humans have always researched plants to treat our illnesses and seaweed is considered to be a specific branch of plant therapy because its riches are drawn from sea plant life.

Seaweed greatly influences cell multiplication because of its mass growth substances, such as vitamins, trace elements, increased chlorophyll syntheses, photosynthesis and regulation of food elements.

Epidermal Detoxification – Fresh cell-burst seaweed stimulates tissue metabolism, which is biologically activated by a heightened elimination of toxins.  It has a remarkable effect on the skin through its purification, normalization and revitalization.  The skin, when well nourished, detoxified, rebalanced and remineralised, suffers no deficiency and is therefore in the best possible condition for resisting all elements that could attack it.

The increase in chlorophyll exchange improves the photosynthesis and assures better cell nutrition, compensating for biological ills caused by unbalanced nourishment.  The stimulants in the seaweed allow the skin to be nourished gently, through their role as deficiency protector.  They contain preventative elements to fight against eventual imbalances.  By stimulating the system’s defenses, they reinforce the skin, assuring healthier skin.

Effects of Seaweed Components – The first action of freshly processed seaweed takes place at the level of the skin and conjunctive tissue.  The multiple trace elements, such as iodine, become catalysts that allow an increase in the speed of biological reactions.  The mineral salts, particularly magnesium, potassium, calcium and silicium act on the vitality of the cells by their ionic potential.  The essential amino acids are the reconstituting factors for tissues, reestablishing protein metabolism.  The polysaccharides represent the nutritive, hydrative and energetic contribution. Seaweed’s numerous vitamins (A, B1, B2, C, D, E, etc) form an essential complex for overcoming the smallest deficiency.  As for the various elements like enzymes, bacterial and antibiotic substances and vegetable hormones – they create many factors acting favorably on skin problems.

CONTEMPORARY USES

The Future Today – Seaweed is a resource that continues to be used for various contemporary purposes.  Consider some of the modern uses of seaweed: pharmaceuticals, thalassotherapy, cosmetology and medicine.  Pharmaceutical companies utilize Alginates for numerous types of dermatological problems.  Seaweed solutions are also utilized as tonics for detoxification and nutritional supplementation resulting from diseases such as rickets, tuberculosis and various states of debility.  Thalassotherapy, prescribed for rheumatism is used for locomotion problems and circulatory trouble and owes part of its effective action to the benefits of seaweed.  Homeopaths also prescribe seaweed and its derivatives for various ailments including obesity.  Sodium alginate is a powerful homeostatic used in the manufacturing of homeostatic bandages which are sterile, re-absorbable and perfectly compatible with antiseptics as well as antibiotics.

In the cosmetics arena Ecklon is currently being used in hair care products and body care products such as ocean algae baths and body wraps and for esthetic facial treatments.
